Blue Contemporary Rugs – Midnight Blue Interior Trend

Living room with copper hand-knotted contemporary rug

‘Washed Denim Copper Blue’, our stunning inky blue contemporary rug, is one of our most recent success stories. Deep moody colours are undoubtedly one of the principal interior fashions for Winter 2016/17, a gorgeous palette of opulent tones, most notably midnight blues.
The upcoming Winter Issue of premium textile magazine ‘Cover’ recommends rugs as the ideal way to introduce this colour to an interior, giving huge impact with minimal effort. The experts at ‘Living ect’ clearly agree, selecting our beautiful ‘Washed Denim Copper’ contemporary rug design to feature in the ‘Dark Sky’ article of their January issue. We couldn’t help feeling our contemporary rug was the ideal match, with the copper highlights adding an unexpected mystique, and transforming a timeless blue to a spectacular modern combination.

Blue Contemporary Rugs in Context

The range of different interiors that can be enhanced by this exquisite rug is quite extraordinary. The subtle abstract design, the perfect strength of colour and the luxury of a metallic silk, give this rug a versatility that is rare for such a dramatic piece. The luxury furnishings store, I&JL Brown chose to frame it with bright white and coloured accents in their recent photoshoot, as pictured above, whereas a premium paint brand took more tonal approach. Either way, this contemporary rug is a sure scene stealer and is set to remain in high demand for many months to come.

Midnight Blue Rugs

Over the past decade, contemporary rug design has diversified extraordinarily. Designers are mindful of the interiors in which their rugs will be placed in, so keeping a finger on the pulse of home decor trends is all part of the job. Colour trends are a hugely important part of this, so every season, rug designs will evolve to meet the growing demand of certain colourways. At Bazaar Velvet, we are no different. The rugs below are just a few examples of the beautiful contemporary blue rugs we currently offer.

Using Midnight Blue in other Furnishings

Sofas
Another approach to introducing this stunning hue into your interior scheme is in the sofa. Coloured sofas are a huge trend this year, particularly in jewel tones such as emerald green and blue. Luxury fabrics such as velvet further accentuate their opulent tone. Many furnishing stores in London offer custom made sofas in a wide range of upholstery options, including Bespoke Sofa London, George Smith, and Camerich- all based on the Kings Road in Chelsea. Alternatively, try Darlings of Chelsea based in Surrey, Parsons Green and St Albans for some beautiful examples, including the Galloway Chaise sofa in Varese Denim R10.

When opting for a coloured sofa, it’s best to keep your walls and floor fairly neutral. Many contemporary rug designs can be used, either in warm beige’s or greys. Try something with a subtle design to add depth to your scheme without drawing attention away from the sofa. Other blue tones can be added to the scheme in the form of accessories or artwork. Metallic elements, are also a great compliment of blue, as can be seen to superb effect in this stunning living room by Taylor Howes Interiors.

Artwork
For a more subtle take on the midnight blue trend, try introducing it in small quantities. Artwork can achieve this in a natural way that keeps the room looking sophisticated. This living room by Godrich Interiors shows how vastly different styles of artwork can be combined in a very visually appealing way. The secret to this is to ensure each of the artworks have a common thread- and in this case it is the blue tones. Furthermore notice that the frames all feature warm metallic tones, creating continuity with the beiges and browns found throughout the room.

There are many different sources for artwork, but for professional advice to find artwork to compliment your room and other pieces, it’s always best to visit a reputable gallery. There is an overwhelming choice of galleries in London, but try Signet Contemporary Art in the Kings Road Chelsea for art in a wide range of different styles, and the option of an interior design service.
Walls
To create a more dramatic look, try painting the walls a shade of midnight blue. Renowned New York based interior designer Todd Romano Alexander, has used this to great effect in his own home- a stunning studio apartment with views of the Manhatten skyline. He’s made a bold choice of sofa too, the tones of the crushed velvet reflecting the wall colour. Large windows and a pale oak flooring add the necessary light and warmth to the scheme. Flashes of yellow in the artwork by Robert Goodnough and Josef Albers give a zesty finish.

This tone may seem challenging to introduce into your home, but one of the most popular paint colours of luxury paint brand Farrow&Ball is in fact a deep green-based blue colour called ‘Stiffkey’.”This inky blue is named after the Norfolk beach where the mud, along with the cockles, share a particular deep navy hue. Although traditional in feel, Stiffkey Blue is often used as an alternative to Down Pipe to create a richly dramatic space with a more contemporary finish. When used in well-lit areas of the home it will appear much bluer, and works wonderfully when contrasted with Ammonite.” For small spaces, try ‘Hale Navy’ by Benjamin Moore. The simplicity of this tone with its slightly grey hints, make the walls appear to recede.
