Colour Trends Summer 2019 – Interior Design

With Summer 2019 fast approaching, now is the perfect time for an interior update incorporating some of the latest trends. The Colour Trends Summer 2019 continue along the theme of 2019’s Pantone Colour ‘Living Coral’; with warm, earthy colours being all the rage. Both soft chalky palettes and bolder brasher colour palettes feature; incorporating trends such as the seventies, tribal style and organic materials. Here are some of the hottest looks to try in your home with contemporary rugs and more.

Living Coral – Pantone’s Colour for 2019

Pantone’s colour for 2019, this vibrant hue is said to represent energy, positivity and nurture. Described as an ‘animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone’, it has obvious connotations with coral reefs, and this is no accident. A coral reef provides shelter and comfort to the creatures of the sea, and likewise, when introduced to our home coral is like a soft warm blanket. It is a particularly fitting trend for summer, and pairs beautifully with both red-based and green-based blues, which make it pop like a tropical ocean or cloudless sky. This colour can be introduced to your home in a variety of ways, with accessories adding a sense of fun and energy to an otherwise neutral setting.

Dusty Pink – The Perfect Interior Update for 2019

Dusty Pink is huge this year. Top London Interior Designer Katherine Pooley is a great advocate: “Colors I see in for 2019 are blush, dusty pink and bronze. Warm colors and feminine tones for on the walls and dashes of soft pinks to break up expanses of taupe or neutrals will instantly update a tired room.” Rather than the girly ‘Rose Quartz’ of 2016, this new tone contains a definite skew towards grey, and is better pared with brass and bronze than the now much overused copper. Released last year, Farrow and Balls ‘Sulking Room Pink’ is still going strong. Joa Studholme, Farrow & Ball’s Colour Curator, describes it as ‘an intriguing mix that sates our desire for both grey and pink. It feels both down to earth as well as a little romantic.’ It’s extremely versatile, as it softness gives a powdery finish to surfaces that’s slightly nostalgic and very easy to live with.

Powdered Clay – The New Terracotta

This soft terracotta tone is one of four colour shades revealed by Crown as the colours of Spring Summer 2019. It incorporates many of the benefits of Pantones ‘Living Coral’ but is displayed in a more muted form. Judy Smith, Crown’s Colour Consultant explains this new choice; ‘Taking inspiration from earth minerals and shell clay, this is a colour that evokes warmth and reassurance, creating a calming environment. The soft pastel palette works well with other chalky hues, or for a pop of colour bright oranges and reds will add drama. For earthiness and keeping a muted colour scheme, add raw organic textures in soft furnishings and lighting.’ This colour is a great example of a ‘sunbaked’ hue, bringing visions of Mediterranean summers.

Nude – The Interesting Neutral Perfect for Rugs

Barely-there pinks, linens and oatmeals are the go-to shades this Summer. They add feminine softness to crisp white, black and tan, for a very modern aesthetic that’s much friendlier than the cold greys that have dominated interiors in the past two years. This colour scheme works best when interwoven with natural finishes such as as knotted wood, jute and linen. It also provides a perfect backdrop to black iron, and more specifically, Crittall doors which have taken the internet by storm these past few months. One of the most versatile Colour Trends Summer 2019, the whole aesthetic is understated, with layered textures and subtle tonal variation creating a calming cocoon.

Spiced Honey – Making your home your Sanctuary

Dulux’s colour for 2019, this chic caramel shade is a again a tone to bring warmth and comfort to the home. As said by the team at Dulux, ‘2018 was an unsettling and unpredictable time… We were overwhelmed by the deluge of news, choices and demands upon our time, causing us to close up and retreat into spaces where we feel safe and cocooned. We pressed pause and took time to regroup….As we move forward into 2019, we find this pause has given people time to re-energise and deal with the sense of unpredictability with positive action, optimism and purpose.’

Pale Pastel Blend – Colour Trends Re-imagined

There has been an evolution in the trend for pastels since the candy shades of last year: “Softer, more muted versions are making their way back in a much more quiet way,” says Brady Tolbert Creative Director at Emily Henderson Designs. The new pastels are much more subtle. These ‘milky ice-cream’ colours are being used in a similar way to neutrals, with cooler tones being balanced by mushrooms and barely-there coco shades. The oval mood is far more sophisticated, with a slightly retro 70’s vibe, which is altogether easier on the eye.
