Choose a Rug Size that Fits the Desk and the Chair

Home offices require area rugs that combine the desk and the chair together. This can be achieved by placing the rug under at least the front two legs of the desk, and completely underneath the chair- even when it is pulled out. Extend the rug out in all directions as much as possible. This not only creates a warm and comfortable space to work but also prevents chairs dragging over the edges of the rug, which is not only irritating, but can damage the binding of the rug. Use a non slip underlay underneath your rug to make sure your office rug stays in place as the chair is being dragged over it.

Additionally, when deciding the size of the carpet, take into account the access areas you need every day. For example, if you need to reach the file cabinets, the edge of the carpet should reach at least all the way up to these items of furniture. Generally, the larger the rug, the more comfortable the room will appear, but be careful to allow room for the opening and closing of doors. A large rug can have numerous benefits including sound dampening which is perfect if you want a quite space to complete your admin work.

Choose a Hand Knotted or Hand Tufted Rug

There are many different rug constructions on offer, which all vary greatly in quality. Hand Loomed or Machine made rugs are unable to take the wear and tear of of repetitive chair movement and heavy footfall, so you are better to opt for a more robust style. Hand Knotted rugs are the most hard wearing of all, and particularly if there are made from wool, show little signs of wear even after decades of constant use. If you are on a tight budget, a good alternative would be a hand tufted rug. These are not as strong as hand knotted rugs, but provided they are made with quality materials, can provide more years of use than most other styles.

Choose a Low Pile Rug

Low pile rugs allow easier movement for office chairs with wheels and better accommodation of heavy office equipment and furniture. Avoid thick shaggy styles, such as Berber Rugs, and instead go for a hand knotted rug with a pile height of 6mm or less. All our Indian and Nepalese rugs at Bazaar Velvet fit this specification, browse our Core Collection for some great examples. Loop pile or flatwoven rug (a Kelim) are also a good choice as they don’t have a pile so chairs can easily slide along its surface. Rugs with a low pile or no pile, are also much easier to clean, running over them with a vacuum cleaner every week or two is sufficient to keep them in good condition.

Choose a Practical Material

When choosing an office rug, it is important to consider a robust material that will withstand the movement of chairs and regular foot traffic. It is best to avoid delicate materials such as silk, bamboo silk or artificial materials as these are prone to crushing. Wool is a perfect option as it is heard wearing, warm and soft to the touch and has a smart appearance that is perfect for a formal home office style.

Choose an Office Rug that Matches your Personal Style

Like any other room, create an office space that is both functional and personal, an item that you will love to live with. Area rugs can help set the imperative mood and comfort to focus on work. As such, it is important to pick colours materials and pattern that bring out the best in your working self. Some people feel energised using boldly patterned rugs while others need softer looks to focus on the tasks at hand. Also, if you meet business contacts in your home office, it is important to consider the impression you want to give. Simple neutrals or dark or muted colours will give the room a more formal appearance and the correct atmosphere for serious business talks.

Consider a Bespoke Rug
